James Penney (1910-1982) Hamilton Four Seasons 1959 The oil on Masonite mural study for Dunham Hall on the campus of Hamilton College in Clinton, New York is signed and dated verso. James Penney was an American painter, muralist, and educator born in St. Joseph, Missouri. He studied at the University of Kansas with Albert Bloch who is represented in the second session of this sale, before transferring to the Art Students League of New York in the 1930s. At this time he painted in the style of Social Realism but later adopted more modernist approaches. As a social realist during the Great Depression, he contributed to WPA mural projects. His style then shifted towards modernism and abstraction, incorporating bold color palettes and geometric simplification as seen here. He became an educator, teaching at Hamilton College in New York for nearly 30 years. A second work by Penney in this auction is a mural study for Hamilton College. His works are held in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Whitney Museum of American Art, and Smithsonian American Art Museum. Board measures 7 x 20.5 with a framed size of 12.25 x 26 inches.
