Orizaba from Jalapa, Mexico 1912 The color woodblock print is signed by the artist in pencil within the image lower right and bears her monogram lower left with copyright upper left, both printed within the block. Composed while the artist was convalescing in Mexico around 1911, the imagery is reminiscent of Mount Fuji, a popular Japanese woodblock print subject. Helen Hyde became fascinated with Japanese art while in Paris, after completing her studies at the San Francisco School of Design and the Art Students League in New York City. She traveled to Japan at the turn of the 20th century and lived there studying printmaking techniques and traditions for nearly 15 years. Image measures 9.75 x 9, sheet is 13.25 x 11 inches.
