David Howard Hitchcock (1861-1943) Lahaina Beach 1928 This exceptionally fine example of Hitchcock's work skillfully projects the light and brilliance and atmosphere of a Hawaiian coast in full sun. The outrigger in the foreground and the arc of the palms lead the eye up the shoreline from Lahaina Beach to Lanai below high drifting clouds in the distance. The painting is housed in its original frame and signed lower right front with the inscription Honolulu, H. I. 1928. The title is written on the stretcher verso. David Howard Hitchcock was born in Hilo on the Big Island to a prominent missionary family, He studied at Punahou School and later trained in Paris at the Acadamie Julian. His work was exhibited widely, including in San Francisco, New York, and the Paris Salon, and he was a founding member of the Kilohana Art League in Honolulu.
