After years painting in Europe and across New England, Diehl began spending summers in Provincetown in the early 20th century. From roughly the 1910s through the 1920s, he maintained a seasonal studio there and painted numerous small-format oils like this example with its charming dedication in the artist's hand verso, the year before his passing: With recollections - pleasant ones -of days that were.
