Frederick Emanuel Shane (Missouri / Kansas, 1906-1992) Study for Runaway Heifer Circa 1937 The preparatory painting, worked by the artist to develop spatial elements, emphasize forms, establish contrasts of light and dark, and create movement prior to undertaking the finished work, is signed lower right and titled lower center. The finished work this preparatory sketch anticipated was titled Runaway Heifer and exhibited at the Kansas City Art Institute's Midwest Artist's Exhibition February 6 - 27, 1938 where it appears to have taken third prize among the oils.
