Jules (1912-1994) Engineer and Brakeman Circa 1930s The graphite sketch on brown paper is signed lower right. Mervin Jules was an American painter and printmaker associated with social realism. A graduate of the Maryland Institute and the Art Students League under Thomas Hart Benton, he worked for the WPA Federal Art Project in the 1930s, producing expressive scenes of everyday life. Jules became known for his lithographs and woodcuts, later teaching at Smith College and serving as chair of the art department at City College of New York.
