Thomas Hart Benton (1889-1975) River Scene with Steamboat and Train 1928 The graphite, ink and sepia wash work on paper is signed lower right front. A title attributed to the scene is provided verso by an the exhibition label for 'Shallow Creek: Thomas Hart Benton and American Waterways.' Jim and Virginia Moffett graciously lent this work for exhibition the way they did so many of the pieces in their collection. The show coincided with the 75th anniversary of Benton's Indiana Murals on the Bloomington campus of Indiana University. It sought to explore how American waterways, from industrial harbors to Ozark creeks and southern swamps, influenced Benton's American Scene themes of freedom, labor, recreation, spirituality, and environmental concern. The exhibition was comprised of paintings, drawings, and prints, with the central focus being Benton's major egg tempera painting Shallow Creek from 1938-39 (collection of the Palmer Museum) as the keystone work. The show opened at the Palmer Museum of Art on the campus of Penn State University, then to the Suzanne H. Arnold Art Gallery (Lebanon Valley College in Annville, PA) and finally to the Indiana University Art Museum, closing May of 2008.
