The meticulously rendered Regionalist theme watercolor with gouache on paper is signed lower right. This scene is composed from an elevated angle perspective the way many murals and American Scene paintings were in the 1930s. Thomas Hart Benton employed this technique in his mural Boom Town. In cinematic parlance, the 'establishing shot' was a similar method of composing shots. It presented the opening ideas and allowed for democratization of the shot, providing a lot of information into one frame. Benton worked with composition in cinema early in his career. Grant Wood often employed elevated perspective in his compositions. In the case of this present picture, the aerial view allowed Janet Turner to compress the foreground, middle ground, and background into one scene while the elements of angular fence, ground planes and roof line come together nicely to create the scene and draw the viewer to the subject.
