George Melville Stone (Kansas, 1858-1931) Mission 1900 Works by the accomplished Kansas artist George Stone are rarely offered for sale. Many exceptional examples are held in the collection of the Alice C. Sabatini Gallery located at the Topeka & Shawnee Public Library in Topeka. This example is signed lower left front. Stone is associated with Kansas and California, which confirm's this image of San Juan Capistrano's Serra Chapel. George Melville Stone was among the first Kansas artists to receive academic training abroad. After early instruction at the Topeka Art Institute, he studied in Paris at the Academie Julian under Leon Bonnat, Gustave Boulanger, and Jules Lefebvre. Returning to Topeka in 1891, he directed the local art school and later helped establish the art department at Washburn College. Stone's refined portraits and Kansas landscapes reflect a blend of French academic technique and Midwestern sensibility that helped shape the region's artistic identity throughout the first half of the 20th century.
