Birger Sandzen (Kansas, 1871-1954) Sentinel Pines 1919 This rare and desirable large format pointillist technique block print is from an edition of only 100 prints or less on Bond watermarked paper and signed by the artist in pencil below the image lower left, initialed in the plate lower right, titled in pencil lower right. Greenough number 31. An inscription verso in graphite reads: Greenough Trust near what appears to be an inventory or accession number. Prints of this type are variously referred to as nail head, nail cut, or nail punch prints, terms used to describe the artist's use of a square-headed nail to indent the printing block, creating the composition. This example is found in unusual color of ink that Ron Michael at the Birger Sandzen Memorial Gallery surmises may have been sepia in color when the edition was first being pulled. Pointillism is an art technique that Birger Sandzen was probably first exposed to in Paris around 1894. During his studies with Edmond Aman-Jean, an early associate and studio mate of the founder of pointillism Georges Seurat. Sandzen at the very least was trained in the color theories that underpins the pointillist technique. Many of his canvases from this 1910s period, and his nailcut block prints from the late teens, display principles of this technique.
