Jean Charlot (1898-1979) Yucatan Family aka Tondo III 1933 The oil on canvas over board, signed and dated below the image, served as an original illustration painting for a volume titled Picture Book: 32 Original Lithographs by Jean Charlot, published by John Becker, designed by Merle Armitage. This image appears as one of the book's 32 plates where it is titled Tondo III. The image was also published with that same title as a chromolithographic print from zinc plate. The chromolithograph titled Tondo III is held in the collection of the the Brooklyn Museum, The Metropolitan Museum, and the Jean Charlot Foundation. Jean Charlot was a French-born painter, printmaker, and muralist who became an influential figure in American art after emigrating from Mexico to the United States in the 1930s. Known for his role in the early Mexican mural movement alongside Diego Rivera and Jose Clemente Orozco, Charlot joined the faculty of the University of Kansas in Lawrence in 1947 where he taught fresco painting, drawing, and art history.
