The original work on canvas is signed and titled verso in felt tip pen on the wood stretcher, and iscribed Copenhagen. Hartwell Yeargans and his wife lived in Copenhagen, Denmark from 1971 to 1981. Mr. Yeargans was an African-American painter and printmaker who was born in Kansas City. He trained in sign-painting, then attended the Art Students League in New York just after WWII, and later studied printmaking in the late 1960s. He produced a significant body of colour woodcuts and paintings that combine figuration, musical/performance themes, and modernist abstraction. His career spans teaching, international exhibition, and cross-discipline media. Because of his dual focus and his printmaking output, his works are of particular interest to collections of mid-20th-century African-American art and modern graphics.
