FINE MARASALI PRAYER RUG, THIRD QUARTER OF THE 19TH C. - The charcoal ground with allover rows of 'in and out' polychrome chevron banded serrated edged boteh, each attached to pairs of serrated leaves, framed with a saffron flower head pointed arch similar boteh adorned charcoal spandrels, within a red polychrome star flower head border. The rows of boteh are shown in alternating facing, each with brightly coloured chevron bands, and each set on pairs of serrated leaves, for similar botehs, set on pairs of leaves, but differing from the following published example which shows diagonal stripes and all facing one direction see, Schurmann, U, Caucasian Rugs , pl.78. pp.220-221. Baku, 1961. This is a fine, vibrant example of type and origin showing exemplary use of colour. Measures approximately 59 x 47.5 inches; 4ft.11 inches x 3ft.11.5in; 150 x 121cm.
