A LATE 19TH CENTURY SHIRVAN PRAYER RUG - The ivory mihrab with rows of polychrome cone shaped bead edged boteh supported by a single ibex below a comb, flower head and comb spandrels within a blue continuous hooked medallion border. Narrow shaped prayer rugs often feature in Shirvan weavings along with the use of white field backgrounds which effectively enhance the appearance of the overlaid motifs. The botehs are arranged in rows, and any sense of rigidity to this arrangement is effectively dispelled by the middle row of botehs which the ingenious weaver has arranged running in the opposite direction. Measures approximately 75.5 x 35 inches; 6ft.4 inches x 2ft.11in; 192 x 89cm.
