A LESGHI RUG, EAST CAUCASUS, DATED 1893/1895 - The blue field with three 'Lesghi' stepped medallions supported by a mass of stylised flora, flower heads hooked medallions and jewelry including standing ibex, below two ivory inscriptions, one reading, 1313, the other, 1311, within an ivory border enclosing continuous polychrome stepped square medallions, star flower heard and meandering vine guard borders. This is a fine highly detailed Lesghi rug. It is unusual to see two different numbered inscriptions since normally only one date is present which generally indicates the date of weaving. If the numbers do represent dates, they are presented in the Hejira Mohammedan calendar, one reading, AH 1311, and the other reading, AH 1313 which translates to the Christian calendar 1893 and 1895 respectively. Given the style of design and the jewel like colours used it seems reasonable to suppose that these numbers do represent the date of weaving, maybe the start and completion dates. Measures approximately 65 x 44 inches; 5ft.5 inches x 3ft.8in; 165 x 112cm.
