A LATE 19TH CENTURY EAST CAUCASUS SHIRVAN RUG - The blue field with all over offset rows of varied polychrome plants and flower heads, all within a saffron linked serrated vine lattice within an ivory border enclosing continuous 'x' and bi coloured rhombus forms. A fine ornate design comprising an unusual number of varied rows of floral elements within a characteristic serrated vine lattice. Interestingly, the accomplished weaver has presented the 'infinite repeat' device whereby half rhombus motifs adjacent to the left hand borders appear to disappear behind the border, and half plants on the bottom end border. This device gives a sense that the pattern continues for infinity, and generates a sense of movement to the composition.
