A FINE AND UNUSUAL LATE 19TH CENTURY AKSTAFA PRAYER RUG - The dark blue field with off set rows of variable polychrome hooked medallions framed within a saffron serrated vine lattice supported by four ibex, above a pair of blossoming trees within the vine lattice, all below a comb dais, multiple flora spandrels within a characteristic continuous polychrome hooked double rams horn medallions, red and blue medacyl inner guard stripe, saffron and red outer guard border. In many ways this is a typical long narrow prayer rug attributed to the Akstafa type. However, this fine example is woven with a pair of blossoming trees drawn in a totemic style located at the bottom of the field giving an added unique element to the design, since these trees do not appear in any other part of the field lattice. Furthermore, the medacyl guard borders are coloured differently which is also a more unusual feature. Such interventions are welcome additions to an otherwise standard composition.
