AN UNUSUAL MARASALI PRAYER RUG DATED AH 1302/1884 AD - The charcoal field with five rows of alternating 'in and out' serrated edged boteh below a plant issuing angular vines ending in flower heads and leaves, an ivory pointed arch frame enclosing continuous characteristic boteh, charcoal spandrels with mirrored botehs and two date inscriptions, reading AH 1302/1884 AD within an ivory continuous plant border. This is a fine example of Marasali weaving with unusual elements, defined by the pointed arch woven with a flowering plant. This ornate addition breaks down the formality and rigidity of the usually seen rows of boteh as seen below the arch. The main ivory plant border is also unusual, its contrasting simplicity acts as an impressive frame to the main field composition.
