A RARE GENDJE PRAYER RUG DATED AH 1278/1861 AD - Composed of three registers, the lower half with bright polychrome diagonal bands, each enclosing continuous three pronged plants below an ivory pointed dome reserve enclosing hooked squares flanking a diamond lozenge medallion headed by a green pointed square hooked panel below red arch spandrels enclosing a mass of rhombus chequered flower heads and three date inscriptions reading; AH 1278/1861 AD, an inner medacyl reciprocal surround and ivory main border enclosing continuous polychrome flower heads. This fascinating prayer rug displays a rare composition, divided into three registers. The lower half of the field is woven with characteristic alternating coloured diagonal bands with plant infill. Such a design is frequently seen in Gendje rugs, though not exclusive to Gen dje. For examples, see, Bennett, I, Oriental Rugs, Vol I Caucasian, 1981, Nos.171, 172, p.151. and Schurmann, U, Caucasian Rugs, 1961, pl.46, pp.150-151. The central register incorporates an unusual dome shaped prayer niche on a clearly defined ivory ground supporting two diamond medallions supporting an octagonal medallion below a striking green pointed square. Such an arrangement is very unusual. The additional red upper register showing a completely different design style, and incorporating three date inscriptions (unusual in itself) compounds the uniqueness of this prayer rug. The simplistic ivory border with repeat flower heads acts as an effective contrasting frame to an otherwise detailed, complex field composition. Likely made by an adventurist weaver who enjoyed and mastered the use of colour.
