FINE DAGHESTAN PRAYER RUG, THIRD QUARTER 19TH C. - The ivory field with.three columns of polychrome stylised flowers between hexagonal bars supported by hooked medallions, below a comb dais, flattened point arch below ivory plant spandrels, within a red polychrome diagonal hooked panel border, blue and charcoal medacyl reciprocal guard borders. This beautifully balanced field design with small variation is seen in a Dagestan rug published in Schurmann, U, Caucasian Rugs , pl. 125. pp.320-321. Baku, 1961.The offered lot shows a frequently seen red border and pattern seen in Dagestan rugs though differs from the published example. Worthy of note are the bright jewel like colours arranged harmonically to create a potent image. Measures 63 x 32 inches; 5ft.3 inches x 2ft.8in; 160 x 81cm.
