AN IMPORTANT 18TH C GEORGE I DOUBLE CHAIR BACK SETTEE - The early 18th century double chair back settee has an undulating top rail centered by a carved openwork shell above pierced baluster-shaped back splats having carved serpents and scrolls either side. The outscrolled armrests raised on scrolled volutes feature detailed lion bust terminals above an undulating drop seat and conforming apron centered by shells in high relief. The seat is raised on cabriole legs, the knees carved with cartouches centered by male masks and bell-flowers, ending on claw-and-ball feet with pierced talons. A fine example in the tradition of Giles Grendey or William Vile with warm rich patina. Measures 40.5 h x 58 x 23 inches, Seat height 18 inches.
