JAPANESE FIREFIGHTER JACKET WITH SAMURAI, ADAIR ESTATE - The rare 19th century firefighter's jacket of thick multi-layered hand-loomed cotton is decorated with dynamic and elaborate scene of samurai with naginata engaging a second figure, apparently female, who swings a sword, the two on a wood bridge with weathered wood bridge significant for the onion-shaped bronze post-cap, all against a backdrop of stylized clouds depicted front and back. A cartouche with text is painted front proper left. Measures 39 x 45 inches.
