JAPANESE FIREMAN'S JACKET WITH SAGE FABLE, ADAIR ESTATE - The rare 19th century firefighter's jacket of thick multi-layered hand-loomed cotton features the elaborate scene of an elderly sage with long white beard wearing a scholar's cap and holding a staff above a coiling dragon emerging from the waves while a second figure offers up the sage's lost shoe (the fable of Zhang Liang and the shoe - lesson of humility and discipline), all in tea-brown, grey, and indigo with stylized clouds. The front panels feature integrated cloud motifs. Measures 50 x 48 inches.
