After more than two centuries of near total isolation from the rest of the world, Japan was transformed when the port of Yokohama opened to foreign trade in 1859, marking the beginning of Japan's rapid entry onto the world stage. This Japanese color woodblock print depicting the treaty-port harbor with foreign vessels and the early settlement grid shortly after Yokohama's opening to international trade in 1859 provide an historical record of the newly transformed harbor, where foreign ships, modern streets, and international visitors signaled the arrival of a new era. This image was published 1860-1862. Sight size measures 22.5 x 28 with a framed size of 29 x 34.25 inches.
