RARE EARLY 18TH CENTURY GEORGE II WALNUT WRITING CHAIRS - The pair with three front legs and high back apparently preceded the much more common 'corner chair' that came later with all four legs evenly spaced, usually on a squared seat. The curved, scroll cut and highly figured single back plate of each joins the outcurved arms with disk-shaped terminals, supported by spindles joining the serpentine seat frame raised a front leg with scallop shell and three other cabriole legs. A similar form is referred to as a 'Writing Chair' and illustrated in R. Edwards, The Shorter Dictionary of English Furniture, 1969, London, p. 137, fig. 81. The author dates that example at 1720 and explains how this relatively rare form of chair, with three front legs and only one rear leg, was of a type predominantly produced during the first quarter of the 18th century. Measure 39.25 high, 26.5w x 20 deep. Seat height 18 inches.
