IMPORTANT 1927 MT. FUJI JAPANESE BASKET, ADAIR ESTATE - The tall, slightly waisted rectangular form is woven in irregular, free-style rough plaiting of split smoked-bamboo in dense, intertwined, rustic texture. The thick top rim collar is constructed from thick ribbons of bamboo twisted over one another in a robust rope-pattern. The defining feature is a large piece of bamboo split longitudinally and bent to form a sharp, majestic triangular peak evoking the iconic silhouette of Mount Fuji. The symbolic handle is bound to the shoulders with complex, tightly wrapped rattan cord knots overlapping segments of natural gnarled bamboo root. This fine example is accompanied by its original bamboo liner and inscribed paulownia wood storage box with the date 1927 on the interior lid. Basket measures 23.5 x 9 x 7.75 inches.
