A RARE 19C ARITA 24-INCH MAP OF JAPAN PORCELAIN CHARGER - The large-scale porcelain display charger made in the Arita kilns circa 1850 is decorated in a meticulously hand-painted cartographic representation of the Japanese archipelago executed in underglaze cobalt blue, overglaze polychrome enamels, and gilding on porcelain. Each province is color-coded with vibrant overglaze green, iron-red, yellow, and checkered enamels. Each is individually hand-inscribed with its corresponding provincial name in kanji calligraphy. For a similar, but far less colorful, and much smaller, Japanese porcelain map plate, see the map plate in the Avery Brundage Collection at the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco (B72P1).
