AN ELABORATE JAPANESE BASKET SIGNED SHOUN, ADAIR ESTATE - The outstanding example attributed to Ishikawa Shoun (1895-1973) features a tall, slightly tapered body skillfully woven in a complex twill weave and segmented by vertical reinforcing stays, each bound with decorative knotting. The form flares into a broad, dramatic rim embellished with a chain link weave and interlocking rings of fine thin bamboo strands; while the shoulder transitions into a complex ''scale-weave.' The top rim, the shoulder and the base frame are all heavily embellished with multiple techniques of intricate, meticulously worked strands, laces, wraps and knots of fine, thin bamboo. The underside features a hexagonal star-brace inscribed with the artist's signature. The original paulownia wood box with inscriptions and original fitted liner are included. This is an outstanding example replete with detail and subtle features too numerous to mention. Basket measures 16.25 x 10 x 10 inches.
