TANABE CHIKUUNSAI ROOT HANDLE BASKET, ADAIR ESTATE - The outstanding example of high-shouldered ovoid form is woven using a dense plain square weave overlaid with thick, vertical reinforcing to a body that tapers toward the recessed corded foot. The vertical stays with their natural bamboo nodules exposed are each meticulously bound in a way that creates a grid-like structure joining sculptural 'knot-work' root wood handle terminals of gnarled bamboo expertly integrated into the rim, secured by incredibly complex braided knots that transition into vertical supports. The basket features a deep, uniform chocolate-brown patina and is accompanied by its original paulownia wood storage box which bears the artist's formal signature and title.
