AN OUTSTANDING CHIKUBOSAI JAPANESE BASKET, ADAIR ESTATE - The extraordinary example of elegant rectangular form is finely constructed in straight, precisely-spaced vertical bamboo slats anchored by tightly wrapped bands of double-twined cord plaiting. The four corners are reinforced by robust vertical stays that terminate in finely sculpted, upturned corner feet possibly inspired by classical Chinese ruyi-cloud furniture legs. The handsome, gnarled overhead handle in contrast to the precise geometry of the body is formed from a singular, gnarled bamboo root wrapped in thick rattan knots and terminating in a spectacular natural burl node. The underside features the artist's incised signature. The piece is accompanied by its original custom-fitted paulownia presentation box. Basket measures 16 x 7.5 x 6.75 inches.
