Bidspirit auction | TANABE CHIKUUNSAI BASKET WITH TOMOBAKO,

TANABE CHIKUUNSAI BASKET WITH TOMOBAKO, ADAIR ESTATE - The statuesque honeycomb mesh basket features a tall, swelling ovoid body that tapers to a skillfully wrapped pedestal foot. The skillfully woven hexagonal weave creates a dense and striking mesh mounted with a gracefully arching handle composed of multiple fine bamboo slats bound at the apex and terminals with a segment of elaborate knotting and wrapping. Where the handle meets the body, it branches into a three-finger buttress, which is then integrated into the body via vertical braided stays that run nearly to the base. The bamboo displays a deep, rich smoked mahogany patina and is accompanied by its original bamboo liner and an extensively inscribed storage box. Basket measures 20 x 9 x 9 inches.
