AN ARTIST-SIGNED JAPANESE FLOWER BASKET, ADAIR ESTATE - The ovoid form is woven from bamboo using an exceptionally fine hexagonal plaiting technique braced by vertical and horizontal split bamboo stays, while the rim is tightly bound with split-cane wrap. Each side has twin braided ear handles that gracefully anchor the shoulders. The underside bears a signature that may correspond to Miyanaga Shomatsuhe. The basket retains its original rich, naturally aged reddish-brown patination and dark-lacquered interior bamboo cylinder along with its original paulownia presentation box. The box has inscriptions that appear to read: Accepted into the 5th Annual Nitten Exhibition (1949). Accepted into the 7th Annual Nitten Exhibition (1951). Accepted into the 12th Contemporary Art Crafts Exhibition. Basket measures 8.25 x 8 x 8 inches.
