A RARE AND IMPORTANT 1868 WOODBLOCK PRINTED MAP OF KOBE - Map of the Newly Opened Port of Kobe in Settsu Province 1868 The interestingly rendered map documents the historic opening of the port of Kobe. Dated April 1868, this rare map was issued four months after Kobe was officially designated an international treaty port. The design accurately charts the plotted grid of the new foreign settlement. The harbor accommodates merchant vessels flying the flags of Western countries under the new treaty powers. This map has been described as a cartographic treasure from the dawn of the Meiji Restoration charting Japan's rapid emergence onto the global stage following centuries of national seclusion.
