JAPANESE FIREMAN'S COAT W/AUSPICIOUS SYMBOLS, ADAIR EST - The rare and unusual 19th century firefighter's jacket of thick multi-layered hand-loomed cotton joined by thousands of sashiko stitches is dyed in an unusual palette earthy browns, greys, and indigo, the reverse is decorated with a large vessel-shaped cartouche emblazoned among auspicious symbols including a shishi, guardian lion, mask. The front retains its original cloth ties and interesting abstract designs in tonal palette and complex iconography. Measures 38 x 47 inches.
