AN UNUSUAL MEIJI JAPANESE FIREMAN'S COAT, ADAIR ESTATE - The unusual 19th century 'firefighter's' coat, made by hand stitching together multiple layers of loomed cotton fabric using thousands of sashiko stitches, features designs picturing objects related to a scholar or intellectual. Richly decorated coats of this type were worn in celebrations after a fire was vanquished, post-battle. Measures 38.5 x 48 inches.
