The work is signed in pencil and numbered 1 of 18. Alan Shields was raised on a farm in Kansas where he learned sewing and needlework from his mother and sisters. He studied art and theater at Kansas State University from 1963 until 1966 when, on the advice of his art professor John O'Shea, he left university before graduating to pursue his career as an artist. Originally studying civil engineering, he shifted his focus to studio art. His interest in Buckminster Fuller's geodesic domes inspired him to break away from traditional flat wall paintings, leading him to create colorful, three-dimensional, and often free-hanging constructions. Alan Shields (1944-2005) was an acclaimed American visual artist who briefly attended Kansas State University from 1963 to 1966.
