Alex Katz developed his flattened forms, bold colors, cropped compositions, enlarged faces, and detached presentation long before Pop Art emerged in the 1960s. Alex Katz's wife Ada, the subject here, has appeared repeatedly in the artist's work since the late 1950s. Rather than just reproducing a familiar face, each variation explores a different mood, perspective, or visual idea, demonstrating how subtle changes in color, composition, and expression can transform the viewer's experience. Katz's work has been included in shows at the Whitney Museum of American Art, the National Portrait Gallery in London, the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, and the Fosun Foundation in Shanghai, among others.
