He was included in the landmark New York, New Wave exhibition at MoMA PS1 in 1981 and participated in the prestigious Documenta 7 in Kassel, Germany, in 1982. During the 1980s he exhibited with the influential Tony Shafrazi Gallery and later the groundbreaking Fawbush Gallery, alongside many of the era's leading contemporary artists like Kiki Smith, also represented in this auction. Brett's work is represented in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Smithsonian Institution.
