Wosene Worke Kosrof (Ethiopian-American, Born 1950) #12 Yoruba Goddess and Bird 1990 The layered composition of abstracted African symbols and alphabetic characters is signed and dated lower right. The reverse is inscribed with the title, and reference to a 1990 exhibition at the Cottonwood Gallery. In his series ' Africa: The New Alphabet ' the artist Wosene elongates, distorts, dissects, and reassembles the letters of his traditional Ethiopic alphabet, and scatters them across the canvas beneath a symbolic African sun. Born in 1950 in Ethiopia, Wosene received a classical art education at the Addis Ababa School of Fine Arts, earning a BFA with distinction in 1972. In 1978, he emigrated to the United States after being awarded a prestigious Ford Foundation Talent Scholarship. He later entered Howard University in Washington, D.C. There, he was encouraged to look inward to his own cultural heritage and forge a completely unique modern art vocabulary, which he did. Wosene graduated with his MFA in 1980. His work is regularly exhibited on a global scale and held in the collections of numerous museums including The Smithsonian, The National Museum of African Art, The National Museum of Ethiopia, The Newark Museum of Art and The Library of Congress.
