Kiki Smith (Born 1954) Constellations 1996 Each color lithograph with applied black flocking printed on a sheet of handmade paper, the three joined in a series as issued by the artist, is numbered 21 from an edition of only 42 prints, and signed in pencil below the image lower right. Kiki Smith, daughter of the sculptor Tony Smith, has a very lengthy and impressive resume of her own. She studied at the Hartford Art School but is largely a self-directed artist whose career emerged from New York's downtown art scene of the late 1970s and 1980s with powerful works addressing the body, illness, feminism, and vulnerability during the AIDS era. Her exhibition record is lengthy and includes multiple editions of the Venice Biennale and she has been the subject of major museum retrospectives at institutions including the Whitney Museum of American Art, Walker Art Center, and San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Her work is held in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Whitney Museum of American Art, and many other major museums worldwide.
