Sam Newton was an American landscape painter associated with the group of painters now known as the Florida Highwaymen, a loosely connected circle of self-taught African American artists who gained recognition for their depictions of the Florida landscape. Born in Georgia in 1948 and raised in Florida, Newton became one of the younger artists connected to the movement, producing atmospheric scenes with palms, marshes, waterways, and the dramatic light of Florida skies like the present example. Board measures 20 x 16 with a framed size of 23.75 x 19.75 inches.
