Sanguine sketches of male nude figures are on the sheet that hangs over a disappearing ledge and a loosely folded cloth. The work is signed lower right front. Alexander Canedo was a Mexican American painter and illustrator associated with the surrealism and magic realism art movements of the mid-20th century. As an illustrator he created covers for pulp magazines like Astounding Science Fiction throughout the 1940s. As an artist, he is best known for his figurative, surrealist-imagery that blends dreamlike symbolism with meticulous realism.
