Joe (Joseph John) Jones (Missouri, 1909-1963) - JOE JONES (1909-1963) OIL ON CANVAS, ALASKA 1943. Joe (Joseph John) Jones (Missouri, 1909-1963) Alaska, Eskimos with Nets Circa 1943 Signed lower left, the work is titled and further attributed by a brass plaque on the frame and again by a label on the stretcher verso. Joe Jones was a self-taught working class Missouri artist who gained national recognition early in his career. During the Great Depression he earned commissions from the WPA and The Treasury Department to paint murals in Missouri, Kansas and Arkansas. Despite his political leanings and government concern over previous communist affiliations, Jones was selected for the U.S. Army's War Unit and assigned to the Alaska Defense Command near Anchorage. Large, fully-realized oils like the present work from this Alaska period are very uncommon. The work is displayed in its original frame.
