Constantin Westchiloff (1877-1945) - CONSTANTIN WESTCHILOFF (1877-1945) MAINE OIL ON CANVAS. Constantin Westchiloff (1877-1945) Untitled (Maine Coastal Scene) Early 20th Century. The skillfully executed coastal Maine scene with steep igneous rack cliff and foam on translucent waves is signed lower right. A nearly identical, but smaller, painting titled Maine Seascape , sits in the permanent collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art (Robert Lehman Collection) exhibiting this exact same vantage point, light treatment, and rock structure. Born in St. Petersburg, Russia, Westchiloff's talent earned him studies at the prestigious Imperial Academy of Fine Arts. In 1904, he won critical acclaim and imperial prizes for his large-scale historical paintings and was granted a fellowship by the Royal Academy to study across Western Europe. Fleeing the Russian revolution, he spent the 1920s living and working in Italy. In 1935, he and his wife, Marie, boarded the SS Ile de France and emigrated permanently to the United States, settling in New York City. He soon discovered the New England coastline and fell deeply in love with the dramatic, rocky shores of coastal Maine. Canvas measures 21.25 x 25.75 with a framed size of 29 x 34 inches.
