Born in Alva, Oklahoma in 1907, Lester Raymer pursued formal training at the Art Institute of Chicago from 1930 to 1933, studying under the painter Boris Anisfeld and art historian Helen Gardner, earning his BFA. He returned to Oklahoma and later relocated to Lindsborg, Kansas, in 1945, where he married fellow artist Ramona Weddle. He succeeded Birger Sandzen as painting instructor at Bethany College in 1946. Raymer was a prolific and multi-talented artist skilled at painting, printmaking, ceramics, woodcarving, metalwork, stitchery and mosaics. Hundreds of examples of his work in all these mediums, and much more, can be found at his original home and studio preserved as the Red Barn Studio Museum in Lindsborg, Kansas.
