JACK PHARO (1902-1991) SELF=PORTRAIT OIL ON CANVAS - The Kansas artist's self portrait is signed lower left front. John 'Jack' Leland Pharo was a Kansas studio potter, painter, lithographer, and teacher best known for his ceramics work in Wichita. He was born in Belpre, Kansas in 1902 and died in Manhattan in 1991. He studied under notable figures including B. J. O. Nordfeldt and became deeply involved with the Wichita Art Association School. While initially working for the U.S. Post Office, he volunteered at the school in the 1930s, eventually becoming ceramics instructor in 1947 and head of the ceramics department in 1949-a role he held for more than two decades. He produced ceramics, lithographs and paintings. The work is unframed. Canvas measures 18 x 14.75 inches.
