Martyl Suzanne Schweig Langsdorf, known professionally as Martyl, was born in St. Louis, Missouri, she studied at the Art Students League in New York and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
In her early twenties, Martyl received several significant public art commissions through the U.S. Treasury Department's Section of Fine Arts. Depression-era New Deal mural commissions for women were rare. Fewer than 10% of such awards in Missouri went to women. Her projects included:
The Russell, Kansas post office mural titled Wheat Workers, 1940; La Guinolee' for the post office in Ste. Genevieve, Missouri 1942; The Courageous Act of Cyrus Tiffany in 1943 in the Recorder of Deeds Building in Washington, D.C. honored Cyrus Tiffany, an African American sailor who served during the War of 1812.
Throughout her career, Martyl's art was exhibited widely and is included in the collections of major institutions such as the Art Institute of Chicago, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, and the Saint Louis Art Museum.
