Maeterlinck Maurice. Twelve songs. Prints Sh. Doodle.

SPb.: V. M. Sablin's Edition. 1905 56 p. Fig. Hard semi-leather binding, Landscape format: 24 X 32 cm. Translated by George Chulkov with drawings by Charles Doodle. Heavy paper. Very good condition.

Translation of the French edition: Douze chansons de Maurice Maeterlinck. Illustrees par Charles Doudelet. Paris, P.-V. Stock, 1896. The cover is by sh.Doodle (1861-1938) - made by the artist specifically for the Russian edition. Translations of songs by the Belgian playwright, poet, and Nobel prize winner Maurice Maeterlinck (1862-1949) were originally published in the July 1904 book the New way. Georgy Ivanovich Chulkov (1879-1939) - organizer of literary life during the "silver age", known as the Creator of the theory of mystical anarchism. He also acted as a poet, prose writer, translator, and literary critic. In 1904, he moved to St. Petersburg, where he published his first collection of short stories, "the Siliceous path". Soon he received an invitation from the merezhkovskys to become the Secretary of the New way magazine. After its closure in 1905, he began publishing the magazine "Questions of life", in which Nikolai Berdyaev and Sergei Bulgakov collaborated. From a letter to A. Blok Chulkov: `Dear George Ivanovich. About your translation of Maeterlinck*: I like I, IV, X, then VIII; in General, it seems to me that the translation has a lot of its own, not Maeterlinck's. For example, in V: in Maeterlinck, the light runs uneasily through the rooms and dies, and You talk about it in a measured way, and not under the first impression. In IV-again, You have your own singsong, especially in the endings of the line 'is`, 'is not'; their kind timidity still does not quite bring them closer to Maeterlinck. Maeterlinck hastily climbs a ladder of his own size, so he soon manages to crumble almost without a trace. And You slow down his haste and rhyme. Maeterlinck has almost no poetry. This raznstvuet materinskaja and Your melodiousness, is a national. I would say that Maeterlinck's poems are perpendicular to Your transmission, as the French temperament is perpendicular to the Russian.`
