GEN. MARK W. CLARK CONGRATULATIONS TO THE 15TH ARMY GROUP UPON THE SURRENDER OF GERMANY
General MARK CLARK (1896-1984) appointed commander of the American 5th Army, which undertook a major landing at Salerno aimed at wresting the Italian peninsula from Axis control. He received the surrender of the Italian fleet and the government of Marshal Pietro Badoglio the same month; his march into Rome (June 4, 1944) marked the fall of the first enemy capital. In December he was appointed commander of the 15th Army Group and finally received the surrender of the stubborn German forces in the north of Italy on May 2, 1945. A scarce printed document, 4.75 x 7.25 inches, Clark's congratulatory message "To the Soldiers of the 15th Army Group", May, 1945, printed above his facsimile signature and issued after the German surrender. He writes, in small part: "You have demonstrated something new and remarkablethat a huge fighting force composed of units from many countriescan become an effective and harmonious fighting teamThe services which have supplied us have overcome unbelievable obstaclesmagnificent supportfrom Allied air and naval forcesThe war is not overThere remains the all important task of inflicting a similar complete defeat of our remaining enemyI am intensely proud of you allsuch invincible troopsForward, to final Victory" Fine condition.
