ORIGINAL 1916 DRAWING OF 13TH CANADIAN BATTALION TRENCHES
ORIGINAL 1916 DRAWING OF 13TH CANADIAN BATTALION TRENCHES
Excellent original pen, ink and white watercolor battle scene attributed to Canadian artist Lt. JOHN MCQUEEN MOYES (1888-1948) while serving with the 13th Canadian Battalion, The Royal Highlanders of Canada, in 1916. The 8 x 6 in. painting depicts trenches occupied by that battalion at Ypres. The artist captions his work: "Sketch taken at Railway Dugouts near Zillebeke[?] Ypres Salient". Fine condition. Unsigned, but from a grouping of Moyes' wartime paintings and sketches, all in the same style and captioned in the same hand, signed in 1916. Fine condition. Moyes served for the length of the war and received two wounds in his left leg. One of his works is displayed in the Canadian War Museum.
